Como sabés, hace unos días he vuelto de un inolvidable viaje de prospección por Marruecos donde he puesto el foco sobre todo en conocer una serie de localizaciones que tenía pendientes en el baúl virtual donde guardo mis búsquedas de tesoros.
Trabajo mucho con espacios para eventos y localizaciones de todo tipo, así que cuando selecciono las que me parecen interesantes, lo suelo hacer atendiendo a diferentes criterios.
Elegir un Riad entre los más de 2000 que hay en Marrakech puede ser una tarea ardua y complicada. ¿Cómo se podría uno decantar entre las diferentes opciones? En una ciudad como Marrakech en la que los Riads son la perfecta definición de oasis en medio del bullicio y el ajetreo, yo me guío por las reseñas, la cercanía al centro o a las atracciones que considere interesante explorar en ese viaje, la decoración y la calidez en el servicio.
De Riad Dar Zaman lo primero que me llamó la atención fue ese maravilloso patio que tiene un ángulo perfecto casi desde cualquier perspectiva, pero también las sonrisas del staff y esa calidez que el equipo es capaz de transmitir hasta desde una pantalla. Fue desde ahí desde donde comencé a investigar sobre esta localización. Cuando me alojé, confirmé que efectivamente en este espacio todo gira en torno a la experiencia del huésped.

As you know, a few days ago I returned from an unforgettable scouting trip to Morocco where I focused on getting to know a number of locations that I had pending in the virtual trunk where I keep my treasure hunts.
I work a lot with event venues and locations of all kinds, so when I select the ones I find interesting, I usually do it according to different criteria.
Choosing a Riad among the more than 2000 that exist in Marrakech can be an arduous and complicated task. How can one decide between the different options? In a city like Marrakech where Riads are the perfect definition of an oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle, I go by the reviews, the proximity to the center or to the attractions I consider interesting to explore on that trip, the decoration and the warmth of the service.
From Riad Dar Zaman the first thing that caught my attention was that wonderful patio that has a perfect angle from almost any perspective, but also the smiles of the staff and the warmth that the team is able to transmit even from a screen. It was from there that I began to investigate this location. When I stayed, I confirmed that indeed in this space everything revolves around the guest experience.

En esta primera foto podéis apreciar cómo uno se despierta por la mañana en Riad Dar Zaman. Los desayunos son épicos, veganos y gluten free. Compuesto de una gran variedad de productos locales y naturales, me comentaron que también puedes exclusivamente reservar un desayuno en el Riad sin necesidad de estar alojado en el mismo. Toma nota, porque merece la pena.
Y no solo los desayunos. Yo llegué al Riad por la noche y la cena que me sirvieron estaba espectacular. Un diez para la cocinera Karima. Más adelante en este mismo post os hablo de esto.
Si el tiempo es regular, desayunos y comidas o cenas son servidas en un saloncito muy acogedor e íntimo en el interior del riad y las disfrutarás justo al lado de la chimenea que encenderán para ti. Por el contrario y si como es habitual en Marrakech, brilla el sol, puedes utilizar el patio o una azotea que igualmente me cautivó.

In this first photo you can see how one wakes up in the morning at Riad Dar Zaman. The breakfasts are epic, vegan and gluten free.. Composed of a wide variety of local and natural products, I was told that you can also exclusively book a breakfast at the Riad without staying there. Take note, because it's worth it.
And not only the breakfasts. I arrived at the Riad in the evening and the dinner they served me was spectacular. A ten for the cook Karima. Later in this post I will talk about this.
If the weather is regular, breakfasts and lunches or dinners are served in a cozy and intimate lounge inside the riad and you will enjoy them right next to the fireplace that they will light for you. On the other hand, if the sun is shining as usual in Marrakech, you can use the patio or a roof terrace which also captivated me.
Conocí este espacio por las redes sociales, pero luego corroboré que tenía que ir a conocerlo personalmente cuando Emma, una antigua diseñadora de interiores que lleva viviendo más de 15 años en Marruecos y que gestiona unas localizaciones increíbles en Essaouira, me recomendó alojarme en este espacio en Marrakech con la siguiente frase: "es sencillo, dulce y bien gestionado". De Enma os hablaré más en profundidad en otro post, ya que tuve la gran suerte de poder alojarme en una de las espectaculares localizaciones que ella gestiona en este mismo viaje.
Peter, el dueño de Riad Dar Zamman, ha tenido huéspedes que se han alojado en El Fenn, La Mamounia o Riad Yasmine, (por poner ejemplos de Riads muy conocidos en Marrakech) y todos posteriormente le han dicho que preferían Dar Zaman. Es sin lugar a dudas un espacio muy hogareño, cómodo y acogedor. De esos lugares que tienen alma y algo que va más allá de la decoración o de los rincones bonitos del espacio. El servicio es super cálido.

I knew about this space through social networks, but then I corroborated that I had to go and meet it personally when Emma, a former interior designer who has been living in Morocco for more than 15 years and who manages some incredible locations in Essaouira, recommended me to stay in this space in Marrakech with the following phrase: "it's simple, sweet and well run". I will tell you more about Enma in depth in another post, as I was lucky enough to stay in one of the spectacular locations she manages on this same trip.
Peter, the owner of Riad Dar Zamman, has had guests stay at El Fenn, La Mamounia or Riad Yasmine, (to give examples of well known Riads in Marrakech) and they have all subsequently told him that they preferred Dar Zaman. It is undoubtedly a very homely, comfortable and cozy space. One of those places that have soul and something that goes beyond the decoration or the beautiful corners of the space. The service is super warm.
Riad Dar Zaman es un escondite íntimo en los confines más tranquilos de la medina norte, en el barrio de Sidi Ben Slimane. Si reservas directamente con ellos, el seguimiento desde el principio es genial. Puedes despreocuparte de todo. Y no hay nada mejor que esto al llegar a una ciudad que es encantadora pero que puede llegar a ser caótica y en ocasiones, estresante.
Normalmente los riads más encantadores están escondidos en laberínticas calles de la medina y detrás de una puerta donde menos te lo esperas. Olvídate de buscarlos por tu cuenta. Mejor relajarte y que te guíen. Al menos en la primera noche.
El Riad te ofrece un traslado propio desde el aeropuerto hasta la puerta del Riad que a mí me vino de lujo porque mi avión llegaba por la noche. Desde donde te deja el taxi, una persona del Riad viene para acompañarte hasta la misma puerta. En mi caso fue el encantador de Adel.

Riad Dar Zaman is an intimate hideaway in the quieter confines of the northern medina, in the Sidi Ben Slimane neighborhood. If you book directly with them, the follow-up from the beginning is great. You can take your mind off everything. And there is nothing better than this when arriving in a city that is charming but can become chaotic and at times, stressful.
Usually the most charming riads are hidden in the labyrinthine streets of the medina and behind a door where you least expect it. Forget about looking for them on your own. Better to relax and be guided. At least for the first night.
The Riad offers you its own transfer from the airport to the door of the Riad, which was very convenient for me because my plane was arriving at night. From where the cab drops you off, a person from the Riad comes to accompany you to the door. In my case it was the charming Adel.
A mi llegada me ofrecieron una deliciosa cena compuesta de 3 platos marroquíes que me dejaron elegir previamente a través de unas opciones que me facilitaron vía correo electrónico. También puedes pedirles una botella de vino o cava a tu llegada o alguna sorpresa culinaria saliéndote de la carta que te ofrecen.
Por el día puedes contratar directamente con ellos tours con guiados por la medina, clases de cocina o diferentes actividades. Por ejemplo, ellos trabajan con un spa movil que ofrece masajes y otro tipo de tratamientos, pero también te pueden ayudar con todo tipo de actividades o excursiones por Marruecos.

Upon my arrival I was offered a delicious dinner consisting of 3 Moroccan dishes that I was allowed to choose previously through some options provided to me via email. You can also ask for a bottle of wine or champagne upon arrival or a culinary surprise from the menu they offer.
During the day you can book guided tours of the medina directly with them, cooking classes or different types of activities. For example, they work with a mobile spa that offers massages and other types of treatments, but they can also help you with all kinds of activities or excursions in Morocco.
Las habitaciones son acogedoras y el baño, que es algo que para mí es importantísimo siempre, cumple mis expectativas con un diez directamente. No me pude sentir mejor en mi ducha mañanera.

The rooms are cozy and the bathroom, which is something that is always very important to me, meets my expectations with a ten straight away. I couldn't have felt better in my morning shower.
Peter, el dueño de Riad Dar Zaman, es una persona encantadora a la que sentí super cercana desde el momento en que comencé a intercambiarme mails con él.
Él llegó a Marrakech en un viaje de vacaciones que desconocía que le cambiaría la vida para siempre. Se enamoró del cielo azul, de la luz, del contraste de colores, de los olores y de la relación tan amigable con los desconocidos por parte de los locales. Son estas las razones que hacen que Peter sigua viviendo en Marrakech.
El Riad Dar Zaman fue el cuarto giro en el transcurso de su carrera profesional. Y parece que estamos ante una de esas personalidades que consigue todo lo que se propone, porque ahora mismo a parte de llevar la gerencia del Riad, Peter me contó que oficiaba bodas en el desierto de Agafay, y también por lo que pude ver, es todo un icono entre las personas y en particular entre los niños del barrio donde se sitúa su Riad.
Cuando Peter dejó la escuela, quería ser gerente de banco, así que trabajó en el banco Barclays en el Reino Unido durante 5 años, luego se aburrió de la rutina y se fue a ser oficial en la Royal Air Force durante los siguientes 5 años, basado en en el Reino Unido y Alemania. Luego quiso tener más control sobre su propio destino, así que se graduó en publicidad en1997 en la Universidad de Londres y trabajó en varias agencias de publicidad en San Francisco y Nueva York.

Peter, the owner of Riad Dar Zaman, is a charming person whom I felt super close to from the moment I started exchanging emails with him.
He came to Marrakech on a vacation trip that he did not know would change his life forever. He fell in love with the blue sky, the light, the contrast of colors, the smells and the friendly relationship with strangers by the locals. These are the reasons why Peter continues to live in Marrakech
Riad Dar Zaman was the fourth turn in the course of his professional career. And it seems that we are facing one of those personalities who achieves everything he sets his mind to, because right now, apart from managing the Riad, Peter told me that he officiated weddings in the desert of Agafay, and also from what I could see, he is quite an icon among the people and in particular among the children of the neighborhood where his Riad is located.
When Peter left school, he wanted to be a bank manager, so he worked at Barclays bank in the UK for 5 years, then got bored of the routine and went to be an officer in the Royal Air Force for the next 5 years, based in the UK and Germany, then he wanted to have more control over his own destiny, so he graduated in advertising in 1997 from London University and worked in various advertising agencies in San Francisco and New York.
Imaginad el siguiente escenario: Peter vino a Marrakech desde Nueva York a visitar a un amigo que había conocido dos años atrás en Río de Janeiro estando de vacaciones. Su amigo se había comprado un pequeño riad y lo estaba renovando. Era noviembre, desayunaban en la azotea bajo el cielo azul y por las noches comían tajines junto a la chimenea del salón. Encontró toda la experiencia mágica. Peter describe cómo por aquel entonces Marrakech estaba llena de flores, olores diferentes, una energía increíble y gente sonriente.
Su amigo, en la segunda noche en Marrackech, le presentó a un español que renovaba riads para ganarse la vida. Durante la cena surgió la idea de tener un riad y a continuación pasaron el resto de la semana visitando riads en venta. El día antes de irse, hizo una oferta por el que más le gustó y comenzó su cambio de vida. Inicialmente Peter no iba a destinar el espacio al alquiler. Fue una vez mudado al Riad recién renovado cuando comenzó a darse cuenta del potencial y lo convirtió en alojamiento, un trabajo a tiempo completo que Peter encuentra extremadamente divertido.

Imagine the following scenario: Peter came to Marrakech from New York to visit a friend he had met two years ago in Rio de Janeiro while on vacation. His friend had bought a small riad and was renovating it. It was November, they had breakfast on the rooftop under the blue sky and in the evenings they ate tajines by the fireplace in the living room. He found the whole experience magical. Peter describes how back then Marrakech was full of flowers, different smells, incredible energy and smiling people.
His friend, on the second night in Marrakech, introduced him to a Spaniard who renovated riads for a living. Over dinner the idea of owning a riad came up and they then spent the rest of the week visiting riads for sale. The day before leaving, he made an offer on the one he liked best and began his life change. Initially Peter was not going to allocate the space for rent. It was once he moved into the newly renovated riad that he began to realize the potential and turned it into lodging, a full-time job that Peter finds extremely enjoyable.
Sidi Ben Slimane, el barrio donde se ubica Dar Zaman es uno de los barrios más antiguos de la medina, con un laberinto de calles con un encanto increíble. Es un barrio residencial auténtico y a pesar de que hay otros alojamientos y buenos restaurantes, todavía se siente como una parte auténtica de la medina.

Sidi Ben Slimane, the neighborhood where Dar Zaman is located is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the medina, with a maze of streets with incredible charm. It is an authentic residential neighborhood and although there are other accommodations and good restaurants, it still feels like an authentic part of the medina.
A tan solo dos minutos del Riad Dar Zaman, se encuentra un lugar para poder probar la que posiblemente es la comida callejera favorita de Peter, el Chicken Tanjia servido por Mustafa.
Mustafa prepara Tanjias de pollo individuales en pequeñas ollas de barro que cocina con carbón caliente toda la mañana hasta la hora del almuerzo. Es como un mini asado con trocitos de limón en conserva y salsa mantecosa que se sirve junto a una cacerola enorme de frijoles blancos como guarnición. Para Peter estas tanjias son de las más deliciosas que se pueden encontrar en Marrakech. Mustafa tiene un espacio pequeño con unas 4 mesas que se llenan cada día a la hora del almuerzo.
El Tanjia con una guarnición de frijoles cuesta 18 dirhams.

Just two minutes from Riad Dar Zaman, there is a place to try what is possibly Peter's favorite street food, Chicken Tanjia served by Mustafa.
Mustafa prepares individual Chicken Tanjias in small clay pots that he cooks over hot coals all morning until lunchtime. It's like a mini roast with preserved lemon bits and buttery sauce served alongside a huge pan of white beans as a side dish. For Peter these tanjias are some of the most delicious you can find in Marrakech. Mustafa has a small space with about 4 tables that fills up every day at lunchtime.
The Tanjia with a side of beans costs 18 dirhams.
Si hay algo que a Peter le gusta de Marruecos es esa costumbre que tiene la gente de comer juntos, ya sea en un grupo de amigos o en familia. En sus palabras, hay algo increíblemente maravilloso en sentarse alrededor de un plato grande con otras personas y compartir la misma comida del mismo plato. Y esto lo ha trasladado a su espacio, donde la comida toma un protagonismo importante.
Otra costumbre que Peter respeta mucho en Marruecos es la forma en que los jóvenes tratan a los ancianos. Él comenta cómo en Marruecos por ejemplo los jóvenes ayudarán siempre con gusto a un anciano a cruzar la calle, o cómo los abuelos siempre viven con sus familias. Esto también se ha trasladado a la filosofía de este Riad. En Dar Zaman, la obsesión por la experiencia del cliente y por hacer que sientas este espacio como un hogar fuera de tu hogar siempre está presente. El equipo entiende perfectamente el significado de la palabra hospitalidad.

If there's one thing Peter loves about Morocco, it's the habit people have of eating together, whether in a group of friends or as a family. In his words, there is something incredibly wonderful about sitting around a big plate with other people and sharing the same food from the same plate. And he has carried this over into his space, where food takes center stage.
Another custom that Peter has a lot of respect for in Morocco is the way the young people treat the elderly. He comments on how in Morocco for example young people will always gladly help an elderly person cross the street, or how grandparents always live with their families. This has also been transferred to the philosophy of this Riad. At Dar Zaman, the obsession with customer experience and making this space feel like a home away from home is always present. The team fully understands the meaning of the word hospitality.
Qué decir de Hassan y de Adel, el staff del Riad. Son la amabilidad personificada, siempre con una sonrisa en la cara y dispuestos a ayudarte. Cuando llegué al Riad estuve hablando con unos huéspedes que me contaron cómo en todo momento les habían ayudado desinteresadamente con recomendaciones, con la organización de sus excursiones y con todo tipo de sugerencias para hacer que su estancia fuera perfecta.

What to say about Hassan and Adel, the Riad staff. They are kindness personified, always with a smile on their face and willing to help you. When I arrived at the Riad I was talking to some guests who told me how they had helped them selflessly at all times with recommendations, with the organization of their excursions and with all kinds of suggestions to make their stay perfect.
Por todo lo anterior, no puedo dejar de recomendar este encantador Riad para tu estancia en Marrakech. El trato personal y el cálido servicio definen este espacio.
